JEDDAH: The Directorate General of Traffic will soon introduce a new system that will give people the right to decide the validity of their driving licenses whether they want them to be valid for two, five or 10 years at a cost of SR40 for every year, sources close to the directorate said.
They also said the programs, financial systems and mechanisms of payment are currently being revamped to take into account the new changes.
They said the duration to pay the traffic violation will be 30 days after the violation has been registered in the system of traffic violations at the Interior Ministry.
The sources said the directorate general addressed all the government departments to provide it with the numbers of cars being driven by their employees along with the numbers of their civil records. An official source at the directorate of traffic said since the Saher traffic camera system was applied in Riyadh, the directorate has been asking the government departments to update the data of the public vehicles in order to make them the responsibility of the employees who drive them.
The source also said the speed limits on many of the streets in Riyadh are being reconsidered with a view to increase them by as many as 10 km an hour.
The Saher system will be applied in 13 Saudi cities. After Riyadh, the capital city, the system will be installed in Buraidah, Onaiza and Al-Russ.
The second stage will cover Makkah. Madinah and Jeddah. The third phase will involve Dammam, Alkhobar, Zahran, Tabuk, Abha, Khamis Mushayt and Uhud Rufaidah.
According to official statistics, more than two million traffic accidents were committed all over the Kingdom from 2004 to 2009 that killed more than 30,000 people and injured more than 170,000. More than 45 million traffic violations were registered during this period.
